(In)Bound For Success: How To Make Your Company “Likeable” Online

Your employees like you. Your customers and clients like you. Your family does, too. Hey—even you like you, sometimes. For many executives and the companies they run and represent, that’s enough. But in the age of social media, over-sharing, and personal brands, online “Likeability” has become an indispensable facet of digital marketing strategy in every industry.

What Is “Likeability”?

Fun, charming, easygoing, personable, sincere, relatable, down to earth—although they come close, none of these words completely capture the elusive quality that makes something “Likeable.”

The choice of words and capitalization is intentional. On Facebook, a “Like” is more than just a feeling—it’s a public endorsement, a statement of solidarity. Imagine a Facebook user scrolling through their feed and glancing at your post: what would make them “Like” your content? More often than not, people “Like” content that makes them feel good, and they click the button to share in the happiness of others.

So what likeablity in a business sense comes down to is creating a personality for your brand—putting a face to a name—that allows visitors to identify with your company on a personal level, and want to take part in (and contribute to) your success.

 

Likeability 101: Take Lots of Pictures

As the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Accounting for inflation, a picture is probably worth about a million words in the digital age.

Pictures remind your followers that you are a real person with a face and a smile just like them. More importantly, though, pictures are an immediate form of engagement that asks very little attention. And with smartphones in the hands of everyone in the office, it’s easy to collect hundreds of pictures for use in social media, blog posts, newsletters, etc. This will help build a successful company image.

Likeability 2.0: Have Fun!

Taking pictures is the first step to Likeability, but that’s far from all there is to it. As you can probably imagine, taking undersaturated candid cell phone pix around the office every day is not the best strategy for boosting your digital presence. Try to capture the moments that make your workplace special, whether it be catered lunches, client meetings, or just hanging out in the break room.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a little fun at work, anyway! You can use these little photo shoots as an opportunity to have a laugh before you get back to kicking butt in and out of the conference room.

Likeability III: The Return Of The Content

It takes more than a thousand words to write a novel, and it takes more than a single picture to tell a successful story. In social media, posting regularly is just as important as posting quality content. You can’t have one without the other.

It may sound like a lot of work to produce engaging content constantly—and it is. You have to make a habit of it. Take pictures at holiday parties, company outings, client visits, and every other special occasion you can think of. If you don’t do any of those things already, it’s never too late to start! Make yourself Likeable and share it with the world!
