Unorthodox Marketing: 5 Ways To Create New Ideas

You’ve done it all before. Meetings, seminars, team building exercises, team outings, maybe even lunged yourself at your co workers. And while there is nothing wrong with any of those (we’re guilty too), there are a few other options to help get the creative juices flowing. It lies in creativity. Creativity is the foundation for any good marketing and advertising. And if you’re really trying to engage your audience and get your message across, sometimes you’re better off reaching them by taking the path less followed. Here are our top 5 unusual but effective brainstorming exercises to add some much needed fuel to your marketing efforts:

1. Sketch It Out

Who said stick figures can’t be art? Where written and oral communication just don’t cut it, you can try your hand at sketching out your ideas. It enables people in the group to pitch a concept, and physically allow others to build on it. It can give your team a chance to develop each other’s ideas and expand them with different perspectives.

Fun Fact: As much as 50% of the brain is wired to receive visual input and it usually takes 1/10th of a second to understand a visual input. This makes it easier for other people you’re collaborating with to understand what you’re trying to say.

2. Storytime

Writing down ideas on sticky notes allow you to list any key points that you want to be incorporated in your final product. You can arrange these notes and start forming relationships that allow you to intertwine different ideas into clearer concepts. By doing so, you are able to map your train of thought and see which ideas make for the best course of action.

3. Daydreaming At Work

Think about extraordinary and out of this world solutions to achieve your agenda. Don’t worry if it’s impossible to do it, just be creative and think of unique ideas, let your imagination take over. Create a list of these wild concepts and figure out why they’re impossible to do. Discuss how you can make these concepts more realistic—possibly by downscaling and utilizing resources, you may already have. You’d be surprised at how close you can actually get.

4. Securing Connections

Forming relationships between unrelated objects allows your brain to exercise its creativity. It forces you to think outside the box and fill in gaps in order to make connections. For example, take 2 unrelated objects from your office and try to find a way in order to make a connection between the two. This is like making connections between completely different ideas in order to form a new concept that could help achieve your end goal.

5. The Pen Is Mightier Than The Sword

Writing allows everyone in a group to pitch their idea and build upon them. Have a sheet of paper and write down your idea, then pass it around to the next person to write their ideas while building on yours. Keep on doing this until everyone had the chance to do so. Everyone gets a chance to equally express their thoughts and collaborate with each other. This activity doesn’t just enhance current ideas, it also enhances the spirit of teamwork within the group.

Always Think Outside The Box

While there’s certainly the tried and true methods of marketing and advertising for small businesses, you sometimes have to find solutions that might otherwise seem foolish to come up with a truly brilliant plan. Try one of these out and let us know how it fared for your and your team. Cheers!
