Taking Care of Business (Google Listing)

As we talked about in our previous blog, keeping your NAP as accurate as you could is critical for your Google listing as a business. It’s a vital piece of information for people to learn more about your business and direct them towards you. This week’s blog tackles questions that businesses usually have when it comes to keeping their Google Business listing accurate. Here are some of the common scenarios that you might encounter and how to fix them:

Verifying a Google Listing That Is Currently Unverified

  • This is to claim your business that is currently unverified and gain control of it. By doing so, you would be able to manage the business’ information in Google properties. This one is fairly simple, just follow the verification process by Google.

Un-Verifying a  Google Listing

  • Let’s say you sold your business to someone else and you currently control the Google listing for that business but want to get rid of it. All you have to do is sign in to your Google My Business account -; Click edit -; Select “Info” Tab -; Click “Remove Listing” -; Click “Delete Account”. Voila, just like like that.

Claiming a Verified Listing

  • What if someone else claimed your business? How do you take control of it? You need to contact Google through these steps. They will contact the person that claimed that business. The claimant has a week to respond to them and verify that he/she owns that business. If not, then Google takes away the authority from the said person and you can finally claim the listing!

Keeping a Listing Active While Moving

  • If your business is moving to a new location, you don’t want the old listing to show “permanently closed”. This would be very misleading to customers, thinking that your business is closed instead of that specific location. What you should do is make sure you update your NAP on your website and social media accounts to keep your patrons in the loop. You should also UPDATE your previous listing and not create a new one. This will allow you to keep the reviews from your previous location and transfer it to the new one.

Fixing Duplicate Listings (Service Area Business)

  • If you find multiple listings of your business, you have to verify the duplicated listing by following the steps above in either “verifying a listing” or “claiming a verified listing”. Once you have done so, you would contact Google to merge the two listings.

Fix a Listing That Is Marked As Permanently Closed

  • If you are the verified owner of a listing that is marked as “permanently closed” from a previous location, you should un-verify the listing and contact Google. They would label the listing as “moved to a new location”. On the other hand, if your business is verified by a different person, follow the steps in “Claiming a Verified Listing” above to claim your business. Once you’ve done this, you could do the steps same steps as before, un-verify then contact Google.

Mergers and Acquisitions

  • It’s very common for companies to merge into a single entity. For example, if the stores remained open after the acquisition, you could easily login to the Google My Business account and change its names. However, if the stores closed down, you should leave the listings as they are and un-verify them. Once you un-verified them, contact Google to label it as “moved to new location” and help send customers to whichever store is still open after the acquisition, enabling you to keep your clients.

Taking Care of a Google Listing With Bad Reviews

  • There’s good news and there’s bad news. The good news is that Google has rules for reviews. If a review seems unfair, you could contact Google to review it and decide if it should be removed. The bad news is that you can’t really do anything to remove bad reviews on your listings if they follow the policies. However, you should utilize your customer service and respond to these negative reviews with professionalism and understanding, potentially winning customers back and adding to your reputation.
