On May 2, 2022, Google announced its new Digital Marketing & eCommerce certification course aimed at SMBs, which came as a surprise to industry professionals as the search engine giant has historically been vocal about not providing certifications that cover SEO.

According to Google: “It’s no secret that businesses of all sizes are struggling to acquire and retain talent. Those who create growth opportunities for their employees have a much better shot at retaining them.”

US businesses can directly apply to get up to 500 scholarships, worth up to $100,000, for Google Career Certificates to train their employees for jobs in data analytics, digital marketing, eCommerce, IT support, project management, or user experience (UX) design.

Why Did Google Launch this Certification?

According to Google, three out of four small-and-medium-sized businesses reported adopting digital tools during the pandemic created new business opportunities. However, 49% of these businesses still lack the information and skills needed to effectively leverage them to derive their full benefits, which is why Google is expanding its Career Certificates program to meet new industry demands.

The Digital Marketing and eCommerce certification is part of Google’s “Grow With Google” initiative, which aims to support people looking to make a career change or boost their resumes, as well as support businesses seeking to upskill employees.

What does Google’s Digital Marketing & eCommerce Certification Course Cover?

The course includes over 190 hours of instruction and practical assessments developed by Google employees, which stimulate digital marketing and eCommerce scenarios.

It can be completed as a part-time study that takes around 5-10 hours a week for about 3-6 months, depending on how quickly one moves through the content.

After completing the course, participants will know more about:

  • Digital marketing and eCommerce strategies
  • How to attract and engage customers through digital marketing channels
  • Measuring marketing analytics and sharing insights

The course comprises seven modules, which participants must complete, as well as pass all quizzes with 80% or higher:

Who is the certificate aimed at?

This certificate is aimed and entry-level employees with zero experience who wish to train for roles such as:

  • Digital Marketing Specialist
  • SEO Analyst
  • Paid Search Specialist
  • Email Marketing Specialist
  • Marketing Coordinator
  • eCommerce Specialist

Google’s certification is designed with jobseekers in mind, with the goal of getting more people into high-growth industries and job roles.

What are the eligibility requirements?

At this stage, certification scholarships are only available to US organizations until December 18, 2024. Current eligibility and the number of licenses granted are subject to applications, business verification, and approval by Coursera. However, it is possible to complete the course as an individual for a small fee.

How much does the certification cost?

If you’re not part of a US company that applied for certification scholarships, then you’ll pay $39 per month. Coursera provides a 7-day free trial, so you can test if the course meets your needs.

Coursera also offers financial aid for learners who could benefit from paid products, but who can’t afford to pay the fee. Those accepted into the program are granted a free waiver that allows them to access the course content and earn a certificate.

How do I access the Digital Marketing and eCommerce certification course?

  • Only US registered business owners or training administrators can apply through Coursera, using their EIN and Registered Business Name.
  • If approved after 5-7 working days, applicants will receive a unique registration link to distribute scholarships to their employees to enroll in the program.

Some industry experts claim the SEO component could be better and more informative. However, the course is accredited by the American Association of Advertising Agencies and the American Advertising Federation.
